#APBMusic: CRUCIAL BGR

This month, #APBMusic visits our Charleston location to highlight rapper Crucial BGR. Hailing from Savannah, Georgia, he found his musical inspiration within his own family. His father, a rapper, played a pivotal role in influencing Crucial's passion from a young age. With the unwavering support of his loved-ones since the age of 18, he continues to cultivate a devoted following in the low country and aspires to share his unique sound with a broader audience.

We sat down with Crucial after his performance to talk to him about some of his favorite artists, his personal definition of success, and what he has cooking for the future.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY INSPIRED YOU TO GET INTO MUSIC?

Crucial: I was inspired to do music through my family. Majority of the people I looked up to had a hand in music in some kind of way whether big or small.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?

Crucial: My success is defined by the progress of the village around me. If we all can click on the same cylinder mentally, spiritually and emotionally then we’re all successful in whatever context the word fits.

WHEN DID YOU FEEL CONFIDENT ENOUGH TO BEGIN TO SHARE YOUR MUSIC WITH YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY?

Crucial: The first time I recorded a song was probably around 11 years old. My father used to rap and he’d let me do some of the chorus parts for him. I recorded my first individual song around 17-18 and by the time it was finished being mixed, I felt ready to share it.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE ARTISTS TO LISTEN TO RIGHT NOW?

Crucial: Some of my favorite artists to listen to at the moment are my collective mates: Laylow Gee, Olboypari and Jermaine. They’re extremely talented.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC?

Crucial: I would describe my music as completely “me.” It’s my interpretation of life and the things around me. It’s a boiling pot of passion, pain, aggression and melancholy covered by the lid of pure rap ability.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR CRUCIAL BGR?

Crucial: What’s next for Crucial is floods of music, more distinctive visuals and media (skits, short films etc.) and more potent bodies of work.
