#APBMusic: Reuben Vincent

APBMusic kicks off 2024 with our tenth performance featuring Roc Nation's very own Reuben Vincent.Sharing his journey from growing up in the Queen City to gracing the APB stage, Reuben's sound promises an unforgettable and diverse experience.

In this exclusive Q&A, Reuben unveils his musical and stylistic influences, narrates his African roots, and chronicles his personal growth since starting his career at a young age.

WHAT INFLUENCES YOUR MUSIC?

Reuben: My influences come from various sources. Growing up in Charlotte, I witnessed the cultural evolution that shaped the art scene significantly. Additionally, my African household, coupled with suburban and urban influences, and fashion and sneaker culture fully contributed to my artistic perspective.

HOW DID YOU KNOW MUSIC WAS YOUR THING?

Reuben: I've always loved music, but my turning point came at eight. My uncle offered me a chance to record in a studio. Despite a friend backing out, I seized the opportunity and recorded three songs. At the time, I didn't even know what a hook or a verse was, but from that moment, I knew music was my calling.

WHEN DID YOU DROP YOUR FIRST SONG?

Reuben: My first song, "I'm Here," dropped on YouTube. I had access to a studio through my mom's friend's boyfriend, and looking back, its similar to Soulja Boy's "Crank That." It's still out there on YouTube, but I won't say where. I might be a bit embarrassed about it but I value the growth.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE SUCCESS?

Reuben: My style reflects my musical influences. Growing up, artists like Kanye West were my inspiration. I've always believed that presenting myself with flair is crucial to my identity.

I want people to recognize not only the depth of my music but also my distinctive personal style—a fusion of the golden era and the present, truly reflecting who I am as an artist.

WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT MUSIC ROTATION?

Reuben: Currently, my music rotation includes Veeze, Jordan Ward, Lucki, and Earl Sweatshirt, since their sound captures the winter vibe I'm feeling. I've also been exploring 70’s jazz funk fusion in addition to curating my upcoming project.
