Queens & Kings: A Tale of Two Cities

From Charlotte, "The Queen City," to Pittsburgh, "Queens + Kings: A Tale of Two Cities" brings to life a visual dialogue between two vibrant cities. The exhibition showcases works that explore identity, resilience, and cultural heritage through the lens of both emerging and established artists from these locations. Rooted in ambition and creativity, this project celebrates the strength, diversity, and unity that define these cities.

The Whitaker Group’s 38a gallery—originating in Pittsburgh and expanding to Charlotte—is dedicated to empowering Black, Brown, and minority creators. Queens & Kings highlights the dedication and craft of these artists, creating a platform for their voices to be heard.

Charlotte Artists:

  • Mike Jones – A creative artist using his photography and storytelling to uplift local voices.
  • Khadija Sugulle – A conceptual photographer, specializing in ethereal, editorial-style work that empowers women through beauty and fashion.
  • Bryant Lindsay – A photographer and videographer with a journalistic approach that captures untold stories and amplifies overlooked voices.

In Charlotte, the exhibition with the opening ceremony on 11.15 will feature 10 works from each artist, giving a pulse to the city while showcasing its essence and culture. Join the opening night at 2705 Tuckaseegee Rd, offering light refreshments, and time to view the art and connect with the artist. Check out 38a and Adidas events here.

Pittsburgh Artists:

  • Evangeline Mensah-Agyekum – A multidisciplinary artist exploring identity and Black experiences through film and photography.
  • Tyler Calpin – A photographer whose work challenges traditional boundaries by blending commercial and fine art to explore themes of identity and relationships.
  • Sager McDill – A photographer whose work focuses on documenting the Black community, gentrification, and environmental portraits, passed down from his family’s legacy.

The exhibition in Pittsburgh will open on 12.13 at 5929 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh, PA, and features works from the artists that delve into the narrative of each city’s unique culture.

Queens & Kings is a collaborative project between 38a and adidas, marking the kickoff of partnership aimed at empowering artists in traditionally underrepresented spaces through 38a's spaces across Charlotte and Pittsburgh.
