Super Skate Posse Giveback: Charlotte, NC

Super Skate Posse x APB Skatepark x The Whitaker Project

In a world where skateboarding is more than just a sport, Super Skate Posse is a non-profit organization dedicated to introducing kids of all backgrounds, ethnicities, and genders to the excitement of skateboarding. By breaking down financial barriers and offering dedicated lessons, the organization aims to provide an alternative outlet for kids to care for their mental and physical well-being.

On October 12th, 2024, Super Skate Posse, alongside special guests, visited the newly opened APB Skatepark in Charlotte, North Carolina. APB Skatepark stands out as the first privately owned, Black-operated, and publicly accessible skatepark, situated within The Collective on Tuckaseegee. This compound aims to uplift the predominantly Black neighborhood of Enderly Park through community collaboration. The day’s event served as celebration of Super Skate Posse’s mission to introduce underserved youth to the sport in an inclusive and encouraging environment.

A total of 35 young participants were selected from impactful organizations; Girl Scouts, Just Keep Livin Foundation, Hope For Harvest, My Brother’s Keeper, as well as other participants identified by The Whitaker Project. The goal was to provide the community of Tuckaseegee with the tools, training, and confidence to embrace skate culture, including complimentary skateboarding gear and lessons.

Local instructors led hands-on lessons, offering a personalized and engaging experience for the kids. Making the day even more memorable, renowned skateboarding icons; Beatrice Domond, known for pushing boundaries in the industry, and style master Gilbert Crockett. Their mentorship offered an additional layer of inspiration, showing the young skaters that with dedication, they too could thrive in and out of the skateboarding world.

Super Skate Posse and The Whitaker Project ensured every participant received complimentary skate shoes from Vans, skateboards and helmets from Triple8, and bearings from North Carolina’s very own Quantum Bearings.

APB Skatepark, designed to cater to both experienced skaters and newcomers, is more than just a place to skate. It plays a crucial role in energizing the West Side of Charlotte, giving the community a safe space where youth can freely express themselves, build relationships, and develop their skills.
